China's first gas chromatograph with EPC technology came out

The first "China Chromatography Manufacturers and Users Dialogue," organized by the Instrument Information Network, took place successfully on September 23 at the Institute of Mechanical Science in Beijing. The event marked an important milestone for the Chinese chromatography community, with updates and details expected to be released soon. In 2005, the first domestically produced GC128 (B-type) automatic gas chromatograph equipped with an electronic program pressure flow control (EPC) system was developed by Shanghai Precision Scientific Instrument Co., Ltd. in Shanghai. This groundbreaking instrument was officially accepted by the expert group from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission in August of the same year. According to Mr. Li Wei, Director of the Analytical Instrument Research Office at Shanghai Precision Scientific Instrument Co., Ltd., this project was initiated by the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission and involved a collaborative effort between Fudan University and the company. After five years of dedicated work and overcoming numerous challenges, the team succeeded in creating a high-end gas chromatograph with independent intellectual property rights. It features several innovative technologies developed in China, filling a domestic gap and achieving technical specifications that are close to international standards. This advanced instrument is fully automated, from sample introduction to report generation, controlled by a microcomputer with unmanned operation capabilities. It includes an EPC system, a micro thermal conductivity cell, a low-noise high-magnification amplification circuit, and an embedded microcomputer with multiple CPUs. It also supports internet connectivity for remote communication, diagnosis, and training. As widely recognized, EPC technology has become a standard feature in many foreign gas chromatographs, offering greater reliability and support for optimizing and automating chromatographic conditions. For a long time, China had no such technology in this field. The development of the GC128 (B-type) marks a significant leap in the technological level of Chinese gas chromatographs, signaling the beginning of their challenge to foreign manufacturers in the high-end market. Mr. Li Wei also shared that Fudan University and Shanghai Precision Scientific Instrument Co., Ltd. have established the “Shanghai Jingke-Fudan Analytical Instrument R&D Laboratory” to leverage the strengths of both institutions—university research and commercial design. Drawing inspiration from international best practices, the company has adopted a strategy that balances product development with technological innovation. By integrating mature technologies, they can quickly develop new products tailored to different market needs, while maintaining a strong focus on independent innovation to prepare for future generations of instruments. Currently, the two parties are targeting the next frontier in organic mass spectrometry, a field currently dominated by imported equipment. They are jointly working on GC-TOF technology. Meanwhile, Mr. Li Xiaoou from East and West Electronics mentioned that the company is also developing a quadrupole GC/MS system, aiming to break the monopoly of foreign companies in the Chinese organic mass spectrometry market.
