Alcatel launches new multi-service switch

Alcatel recently introduced the new 1850 TSS (Transport Service Switch) at the Madrid Broadband World Forum, showcasing a groundbreaking advancement in multiservice switching technology. The switch features a revolutionary universal switching architecture, enabling it to support a wide range of services with unmatched flexibility. This advanced platform integrates Layer 1 and Layer 2 Ethernet, TDM, and WDM switching capabilities into one unified system, making it capable of functioning as a full circuit switch, a complete packet switch, or an MSPP device that supports WDM. This versatility positions the 1850 TSS as a highly adaptable solution for modern network demands. Available in two configurations — a 320-Gbps model supporting up to 32 cards and a 40-Gbps version with 6 cards — the device is currently focused on the European market. Telecom Italia has already initiated trials, signaling strong early interest from key operators. What sets the 1850 TSS apart is its use of a dedicated ASIC chip, which avoids the common approach of embedding TDM and packet processors like other MSPP devices. This design not only enhances performance but also reduces complexity, offering a more efficient and scalable solution for service providers looking to evolve their networks. With its innovative architecture and flexible deployment options, the 1850 TSS represents a major step forward in the evolution of optical transport systems. It’s clear that Alcatel is pushing the boundaries of what a multiservice switch can do, and this product is likely to have a significant impact on the future of broadband and telecommunications infrastructure.
