The 7th Wuhan International Auto Show took place during the first year of China's Eleventh Five-Year Plan, aligning with the national strategy to promote the development of Central China. As a key industry in Wuhan, the automotive sector is expected to play a leading role in the region’s economic rise. Recently, Vice Mayor Yue Yong, a member of the Standing Committee of the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee, shared his insights on this topic.
Vice Mayor Yue emphasized that the automobile and machinery manufacturing industries are vital to Wuhan's economy. In 2005, enterprises above designated size in this sector achieved a total industrial output value of 39.3 billion yuan, accounting for 17.9% of the city’s overall industrial output (238.6 billion yuan). This made it the second-largest pillar industry after the steel sector, which generated 46.8 billion yuan. Among these, five companies had annual outputs exceeding 10 billion yuan, including Shenlong Motor Co., Ltd. According to data from the first half of this year, the auto and machinery industry showed strong multi-polar growth. From January to June, the sector’s total output reached 26.466 billion yuan, surpassing the steel industry’s 201.81 billion yuan, marking it as the main driver of industrial growth this year.
During the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period, Wuhan will focus on developing automotive industry clusters and extending the supply chain. First, it aims to further expand major vehicle manufacturers. By the end of the plan, Shenlong Company will complete its second-phase expansion, including the construction of a new plant and the expansion of Dongfeng Honda. Additionally, efforts will be made to develop electric vehicles, aiming to achieve an annual production capacity of over 600,000 vehicles. Second, the city will accelerate the formation of auto parts clusters, striving to integrate into both national and global procurement systems. By introducing key components and focusing on core areas like engines, transmissions, and braking systems, the industry can enhance competitiveness and reduce costs. Third, the government will encourage innovation by increasing R&D investment at centers such as the Dongfeng Electric Vehicle and Dongfeng Cummins Engine Research Institutes, improving the technological capabilities of Wuhan’s auto industry.
Regarding the auto show, Vice Mayor Yue highlighted several priorities. As a government-led event, Wuhan should leverage the show’s “gathering†and “dissemination†functions to build an industrial cluster. This will help expand the industry chain and drive progress in the automotive sector across Central China and beyond. Second, the city should make full use of domestic and international resources and markets to build a strong international brand. Finally, as the main organizer, Wuhan must closely follow global and domestic trends, act as a bridge for local companies to enter the international supply chain, and support their long-term growth.
