Alcatel recently introduced the newest optical metro switch, the 1850 TSS (Transport Service Switch), during the Madrid Broadband World Forum. The company highlighted that this device features a groundbreaking universal switching architecture, marking a significant advancement in multiservice switch technology. Designed to support a wide range of services, the 1850 TSS integrates Layer 1 and Layer 2 Ethernet, TDM, and WDM switching capabilities on a single platform. This versatility allows the device to function as a 100% circuit switch, a 100% packet switch, or an MSPP (Multi-Service Provisioning Platform) device with WDM support.
Available in two configurations — 320-Gbps for a 32-card model and 40-Gbps for a 6-card model — the 1850 TSS is currently focused on the European market. Telecom Italia has already initiated trials, signaling strong interest from key operators. One of the standout features of the 1850 TSS is its use of a dedicated ASIC chip, which sets it apart from other MSPP devices that typically integrate both TDM and packet processors. This design enhances performance and efficiency while offering greater flexibility in network deployment. As the demand for high-capacity, multi-service transport solutions continues to grow, the 1850 TSS is positioned to play a crucial role in shaping the future of optical networking.
