Automotive Industry: Boosting Wuhan's Leading Rise in Central China

The 7th Wuhan International Auto Show took place during the first year of China's Eleventh Five-Year Plan, aligning with the national strategy to promote the development of Central China. As a key industry in Wuhan, the automotive sector was expected to play a leading role in the region's economic rise. Recently, Vice Mayor Yue Yong shared his insights on this important topic. Vice Mayor Yue emphasized that the automobile and machinery manufacturing industry is one of the city's core industries. In 2005, enterprises above a designated size in this sector achieved a total industrial output value of 39.3 billion yuan, making up 17.9% of Wuhan’s overall industrial output (238.6 billion yuan). This placed it second only to the steel industry. Notably, five companies—Wugang, Wuyan, Petrochemical, Huazhong Power Network, and Shenlong—each generated over 10 billion yuan in annual output, with Shenlong Motor among them. According to data from January to June of this year, the industrial economy showed a multi-polar development trend. The automobile and machinery equipment manufacturing sector produced 26.466 billion yuan in output, surpassing the steel industry’s 201.81 billion yuan. This marked the sector as the main driver of growth in Wuhan’s industrial economy. During the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period, Wuhan will focus on developing automotive industry clusters and extending the industry chain. First, the city will support the growth of vehicle manufacturers. By the end of the plan period, efforts will be made to complete the second phase expansion of Shenlong Company, construct a new Shenlong Second Plant, expand Dongfeng Honda, and advance R&D and production of electric vehicles, aiming to achieve an annual capacity of over 600,000 vehicles. Second, the city will accelerate the formation of auto parts clusters, striving to integrate into national and global supply chains. By following trends in modular procurement, Wuhan plans to attract key components, extend the industry chain, increase production scale, lower costs, and improve competitiveness. Key areas include engine and transmission assembly, front and rear axle systems, braking systems, and stamping centers. Third, the city will encourage enterprises to enhance their independent innovation capabilities. Building on existing R&D centers like the Dongfeng Electric Vehicle and Dongfeng Cummins Engine Research Centers, more investment will be made to continuously improve technological capabilities. Regarding the auto show, Vice Mayor Yue highlighted several key tasks. As a government-led event, Wuhan should leverage the show’s functions of "aggregation" and "dissemination" to serve as a platform for industrial clustering. Through these clusters, the industry chain will expand, driving progress in the automotive sector across Central China and beyond. Additionally, the city should make full use of both domestic and international resources and markets to build an international brand. Finally, as the main organizer, the city must closely monitor global and domestic automotive trends, understand the industry's direction, and help local companies connect with the international supply chain.
