According to a comprehensive foreign news report, Volvo Car Group is preparing to build a complete vehicle production plant in the United States, and plans to export the S90L "strategic flagship car" produced in China to the United States.
Domestic Volvo S90L is expected to land in the United States
Since last year, it has been common to say that Volvo will export China's Volvo S60L to the US in 2015. Last September, Volvo Car Group CEO Hakan Samuelsson also confirmed this point. However, people familiar with the matter told the media that after the S60L, Volvo is also preparing to add a domestic Volvo "strategic flagship model" to the product lineup exported to the United States.
At the 2015 North American (Detroit) International Auto Show that opened this week, Volvo brought a Volvo S60 Inspirition, which foreign media pointed out was the Volvo S60L produced at the Chengdu plant, which was originally only for the Chinese market. Volvo is preparing to enter the US market by gradually testing the water. In 2015, it plans to export 1,500 Volvo S60 Inspirition/S60L to the United States, far less than the 26,000 sales in China.
Reuters quoted executives from Geely as saying that Volvo is also considering exporting a large flagship car based on the new platform; the car will be sold to the US and other markets along with the S60L; this strategic model may be named S90.
It is reported that a few months ago, Samuelson had signed a plan to export a number of Chinese-made Volvo models to the United States, which coincided with the statement that “the plan was quickly pushed forward†when it first revealed the tone.
From the plans announced by Volvo in China last year, it will introduce a new car with the Scalable Product Architecture platform at the Daqing plant. At that time, the industry speculated that the Volvo S80 successor model S90, and the Chinese version will be finalized as the S90L long wheelbase version. In the description of the new platform, the S90L is also close to the above-mentioned executives.
Foreign media believe that if Volvo can successfully export Chinese-made vehicles to the United States, both the automotive industry and Volvo's parent company Geely Holding Group will have a huge impact.
Regarding foreign media reports, Volvo spokesman David Ibison said at the Detroit Auto Show: "The Volvo S60L has the same level of rear-seat space, and some places closely meet the needs of American consumers. The car is manufactured at the Chengdu factory, but will be launched for the first time. This week's Detroit Auto Show. The S60L export is only part of our US business recovery plan."
S90 speculation
It is reported that the Volvo S90 will replace the existing S80 model, with the old mid-range luxury sedan as a competitor, such as the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The British media forecast that the new Volvo S90 is expected to go on sale in 2016, starting at more than 30,000 pounds, or about 302,000 yuan. This price is also close to the aforementioned competing products such as the BMW 5 Series.
Volvo S90 and Volvo XC90 have a total platform. All future Volvo products will be derived from the SPA and compact modular architecture CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) two platforms. Models derived from the SPA platform include the XC90, S90, the new XC60, the new S60 and the new V50. The CMA platform is the result of the joint development of Volvo and Geely, which will become the blueprint for the two major brands of compact cars and small cars.
From the imagination of the foreign media, the S90 features a soft and unique front curve, an avant-garde grille and headlights and T-LED daytime running lights.
The interior of the S90 is also influenced by the new XC90, featuring premium leather seats, solid wood trim and metal trim, digital gauges, large display screens, and infotainment systems. The XC90's luxurious crystal shift lever is also expected to be used by the S90 to enhance luxury.
Because the S90 is based on the SPA modular architecture and can accommodate multiple powertrains, it will be equipped with the Drive-E intelligent E-drive series of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. With the D4 version currently used in the S60 and V40, the engine's maximum power output is 180 hp and the CO2 emission level is only 99 g/km. In contrast, in the latest BMW 5 Series, the 520d model has a power output of 181 hp and a CO2 emission level of 114 g/km. Therefore, the S90 is obviously more advantageous.
In order to enhance environmental performance, the Volvo S90 is expected to introduce a plug-in hybrid version to reduce CO2 emissions to 50 g/km.
