Incorporating digestion and absorption into the industrial model, Kaifeng Air Subsidiary has made significant efforts to align with international standards and achieve localization in large-scale air separation plants. Through a thorough analysis of the technological gaps between Chinese manufacturers and their global counterparts, the company set a clear goal: to enhance its own technological development capabilities. To this end, they adopted advanced process simulation software from abroad and successfully implemented it through a process of digestion, absorption, and further innovation. This allowed the company to significantly improve the calculation and design capabilities of its air separation equipment, laying the technical foundation for domestic production of large-scale air separation units.
In addition, the company introduced advanced technologies such as NREL turbomachinery design, ternary impeller design, and manufacturing software, along with key processing equipment, which greatly enhanced the design and manufacturing standards of air separation turbines. These improvements acted as a catalyst, accelerating the overall development of the company.
After achieving these milestones, Kaifeng Air Subsidiary did not rest on its laurels. Instead, it continued to push itself higher by introducing dynamic process simulation tools, stress analysis software, and various computational programs for individual equipment, once again elevating its R&D capabilities to new levels.
Over the years, Kaifeng Air Sub-Group has always placed a strong emphasis on technological innovation, especially since the 1990s, when the pace of innovation accelerated. In the early 1990s, the company collaborated with Tianjin University to explore the use of structured packing in distillation towers for air separation plants. After extensive research, they designed a structured packing for the upper tower of a 3200m³/h air separation unit and launched it in October 1995. Following data analysis and optimization, they applied the same technology to an argon separation system, launching it in November 1997. This marked the beginning of a completely distillation-free hydrogen production technology in China. Thanks to its advanced design and reliable performance, this 6000m³/h air separation plant won the National Excellent New Product Award. The implementation of structured packing and full-refining argon technology brought Chinese air separation manufacturing into a new era, significantly reducing energy consumption and increasing argon production capacity, thereby promoting the development of high-quality steel smelting and argon-related technologies.
Internal compression process air separation equipment has gained popularity due to its safety and high product purity, becoming the mainstream in the global development of large-scale air separation systems. Kaifeng Air Subsidiary began developing internal compression equipment for capacities up to 15,000m³/h in 1995, successfully launching it in 1998. With continuous improvements, the company developed a series of internal compression air separation units with varying specifications and pressure levels, reaching internationally advanced design standards. China’s first domestically produced 40,000m³/h air separation unit, operating at 8.5 MPa, was a milestone that became essential for the domestic production of large-scale air separation plants.
To date, structured packing towers, full-refining argon technology, and internal compression processes remain among the most widely used technologies in the global air separation industry. Therefore, it is fair to say that Kaifeng Air Subsidiary has played a pioneering role in advancing the technological progress of China’s air separation industry.
Continuing its journey forward, Kaifeng Air Subsidiary Group has actively explored new paths for corporate reform. With support from the municipal Party Committee and government, the company completed the transfer of state-owned assets on November 8, 2004. Today, after a complete restructuring, the company presents a fresh image.
