Changsha, China – December 16 (Reporter Liu Shuangshuang) At the 2005 China (Changsha) Automobile Summit held today, Guo Konghui, a renowned automotive expert and the only academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, emphasized that China’s auto industry has made significant progress. As the third-largest car sales market and fourth-largest producer globally, the sector must not only catch up but also surpass global standards by embracing the concept of "five self-reliances."
The "five self-reliances" proposed by Academician Guo include independent opening, independent branding, independent development, independent innovation, and independent growth. These principles aim to address the challenges faced by China's auto industry and foster sustainable development.
Guo pointed out that while China has been developing its automobile industry for nearly five decades, countries like South Korea, which started later, have managed to build strong domestic brands and become major players in the global market. In contrast, China still faces debates about the importance of national brands.
In an era of economic globalization, how can China rise in the auto industry? According to Guo, the key lies in balancing openness with autonomy. By growing internal capabilities through openness, China can overcome dependency issues and build a strong foundation for independent development. This involves cultivating its own brands, driving innovation, and shifting from "local assembly manufacturing" to "localized development" and "knowledge-based indigenization."
This transformation will ultimately lead to a virtuous cycle of self-driven growth in the auto industry. Guo also highlighted the impressive growth of China’s auto production and sales, which increased from 1.06 million units in the 1990s to 5.07 million in 2004. Companies like Chery and Geely are emerging as strong contenders in the domestic market.
With continued reforms and adherence to the "import and digest innovation" strategy, Guo believes it is entirely feasible for China's auto industry to take the lead in the future.
