A fire broke out on Wednesday at Pier 11 Marina, located on the Far South Side of the city, causing significant damage to at least four boats. Officials estimate that the total damages could exceed $1.1 million.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m., when crews from the Chicago Fire Department and the Dolton Fire Department responded to the scene at 826 E. 138th St., which is situated along the Little Calumet River near the southern edge of the city. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered three boats already engulfed in flames.
As emergency personnel worked to contain the fire, it spread to a fourth vessel. According to reports, the fire was reportedly caused by a recreational boat owner who was attempting to winterize his boat—a process that involves covering it with a plastic tarp and sealing it using heat. The owner was using a propane tank during the process, and at some point, the boat caught fire.
Among the damaged vessels was a historic boat used for sightseeing tours along the Chicago River. This particular vessel was operated by Chicago First Lady Cruises and its sister company, Mercury Cruises.

Residents in the area reported seeing thick smoke rising from the marina, and local authorities urged people to avoid the area until the situation was under control. Emergency crews worked through the day to fully extinguish the fire and prevent further damage. No injuries have been reported so far, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
