Working fire in Chicago, 1-4-23

Excerpts from CBSnews.com:

A devastating fire broke out on Wednesday at Pier 11 Marina on the city’s Far South Side, causing significant damage to at least four boats. Officials estimate that the total damages could exceed $1.1 million.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m., when crews from the Chicago Fire Department and the Dolton Fire Department arrived at the marina located at 826 E. 138th St., along the Little Calumet River on the southern edge of the city. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered three boats already engulfed in flames.

As emergency responders worked to control the fire, it spread to a fourth vessel. According to reports, the fire was likely caused by a recreational boat owner attempting to winterize his boat. This process typically involves covering the boat with a plastic tarp and sealing it with heat. However, the owner was using a propane tank during the procedure, which led to the fire.

Among the damaged vessels was a historic boat used for tours along the Chicago River. The boat was operated by Chicago First Lady Cruises and its sister company, Mercury Cruises.

From ChicagoFDMedia on Twitter:

Marina fire at 824 East 138th. Two boats involved. Firefighters have been pumping water for hours. Dolton FD responded first, realized it was in Chicago, and contacted CFD, but stayed on scene with their aerial unit to help. It appears the fire may have started due to a mishap during winterization.

Several photos from the scene were shared by ChicagoFD Media, showing the intense efforts of firefighters working to contain the blaze. The images highlight the scale of the fire and the dedication of the responding teams.

This incident has raised concerns about safety procedures during boat winterization, especially when handling flammable materials like propane tanks. Local authorities are expected to investigate further to determine the exact cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
