To-Go Containers: It’s a Material Thing

Recently, we've been digging deeper into understanding the environmental impacts of different types of containers. When creating MyGo Containersâ„¢, we paid close attention to every detail to ensure our design aligned with eco-friendly principles. Our approach is guided by the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Most organizations that choose MyGo Containersâ„¢ do so because they align with sustainable goals, but surprisingly, they also offer significant cost savings. By transitioning to a reusable system, businesses can cut down on both the use and expense of single-use to-go packaging right away. Let's explore the harsh realities of how various materials commonly used in takeout containers negatively affect the environment.

Plastics:
Shockingly, only 9% of plastics in the U.S. are actually recycled, a practice often called "wish-cycling." People assume that single-use items will be recycled, even though bioplastics made from renewable resources like palm leaves or bamboo still contain chemicals. These aren't truly compostable or healthier alternatives, leading to multiple environmental challenges. It's clear this isn't the solution we need.

Aluminum:
Recycling aluminum requires just 5% of the energy needed to produce new aluminum from bauxite ore. That sounds promising, but there's a catch—recycling aluminum releases harmful toxins into the environment. Additionally, it generates a highly toxic waste product called "dross," which has to be carefully disposed of in landfills to avoid groundwater contamination.

Styrofoam:
Popularly known as expanded polystyrene, Styrofoam is only accepted at a few recycling centers. Consequently, most foam food containers end up in landfills, where they persist indefinitely. Worse yet, they often find their way into rivers and streams. Even when Styrofoam is recycled, it's typically turned into something entirely different, and new foam containers cannot be made from recycled materials. So, even if Styrofoam recycling became widespread, it would remain an unsustainable choice due to its reliance on virgin petroleum resources.

Compostable:
Although "compostable" containers seem convenient, they don't break down in an environmentally friendly manner. In fact, as they decompose, they release harmful substances. Studies suggest that these containers shouldn't even be added to personal compost piles due to the chemicals used to hold them together.

Thanks to MyGo Containersâ„¢, our products are crafted from materials that can be repurposed at the end of their lifecycle.
