Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at a commercial building located at 1008 S. Kilbourn Avenue this morning around 8:00 AM. The blaze broke out in the center of a one-story, 100 x 125-foot brick structure, which quickly spread through the roof. Due to the intensity and size of the fire, it was escalated to a 2-11 alarm before being brought under control.
According to a brief report from the *Chicago Tribune*, the building—a factory—was occupied when the fire started. Fortunately, all occupants managed to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported.
Jeff Rudolph, a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several striking images showing the harsh winter conditions. Despite the cold temperatures and heavy snow on the ground, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames.
One image shows Chicago Engine 38 positioned near a hydrant, while another captures Squad 2A using a master stream from a Snorkel to tackle the fire. Firefighters on top of Engine 38 are seen encrusted with ice, highlighting the extreme conditions they faced. Tower Ladder 10 also played a key role, using an elevated master stream to cool down hot spots after the main fire was extinguished.
Truck 36’s crew worked with hand tools as their apparatus was parked a block away, and Engine 113 was actively pumping water during the operation. A particularly poignant photo shows a firefighter from Engine 38 with a thick layer of ice forming around his helmet, emphasizing the challenging environment.
The incident underscores the dedication and resilience of Chicago’s first responders, who continue to work in difficult conditions to protect the community.
