Hey everyone,
This message is from Bill Friedrich, and he's starting a series that delves into the history of each of the Chicago Fire Department's (CFD) Turret Wagons, beginning with 6-7-1.
Back in December 1961, on the 14th, this vehicle was organized at 1244 N. Orleans. It was a 1961 Willy’s Jeep, and the FD repair shops put together the body and installed a high-pressure monitor capable of pumping out 2000 gallons per minute (gpm). However, it was disbanded back in February 1977.
Fast forward to June 1978, where it was reorganized at 55 W. Illinois St. This time around, they used a 1975 Chevy C20 chassis. The CFD shops crafted and mounted the body along with twin Eastman HP monitors that could handle up to 4000 gpm.
Then came another change in February 1986, now using a 1975 Mack MB607T chassis. Again, the CFD shops were responsible for the fabrication and installation of the body, but this time they added twin stang hydraulic high-pressure deluge monitors that could flow an impressive 20,000 gpm!
Attached are some photos of these different iterations taken by Bill Friedrich himself. It’s fascinating to see how technology and design have evolved over the years to enhance firefighting capabilities.
If you're interested, I’ve included a link below to the first part of Bill's series on the history of the CFD Turret Wagons. It provides even more detailed information about the evolution and significance of these vehicles.
Take care,
