Use pressure lead method to measure the gear pump meshing gap

1. Selection of Measuring Tools 1) Choose a 0–25 mm micrometer. Before using it, wipe the measuring faces with a clean, soft cloth and check the zero setting to ensure accuracy. 2) Place the lead wire in the center between the measuring anvil. Apply the correct amount of force: first turn the thimble until the measuring surfaces just touch the lead wire, then turn the ratchet until you hear a crisp "click" three times, ensuring consistent pressure. 3) Take accurate readings: first read the value on the fixed sleeve, then the rotating barrel, and add both values together for the final measurement. 2. Choosing the Right Soft Lead Wire Select a soft lead wire with an appropriate diameter that fits the application. The wire should be pliable enough to conform to the gear tooth profile without breaking during the process. 3. Pressure Lead Operation 1) Assemble the driving gear properly. 2) Attach three sections of soft lead wires to the teeth of the driven gear at equal intervals, following the direction of the tooth width. Ensure that the tooth with the lead wire is positioned in the discharge cavity when the driven gear is assembled. 3) Mark the coupling and install the sleeve and pump cover. 4) Turn the coupling counterclockwise by hand to guide the flexible lead into the cavity. Then disassemble the pump cover and sleeve. 5) Remove the driven gear and carefully take out the soft lead. Clean it gently to avoid distortion. 6) Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of each section of the soft lead at the gear meshing point and record the results. 4. Data Analysis 1) The sum of the thicknesses of all three lead sections at the gear meshing point represents the meshing clearance. If one side of the lead is crushed, use the thickness of the opposite side as the actual clearance. 2) Conclusion: Compare the measured maximum clearance with the standard range (usually 0.04–0.08 mm). Based on this comparison, determine whether the component can continue to be used or needs replacement. This method provides a reliable way to assess gear condition and ensure proper operation.
