Tinley Park Technical Rescue 12-2

From Dylan Konchan: > Tinley Park emergency call regarding two individuals trapped in a deep hole. Mutual aid requested from both Oak Forest and Flossmoor teams at the location on 18307 White Oak Court. The Chicago Sun-Times broke the story with these details: > Two young girls who were playing inside a large excavation pit within their neighborhood in Tinley Park were successfully rescued on Sunday afternoon after a portion of the mud wall collapsed and buried them. It happened when one of the girls accidentally touched the side of the pit, causing the unstable structure to cave in. While Sarah ended up fully submerged in the soil, her friend Nicole had her head still above ground level. According to Robert Salwierak, Nicole's father, there was a small pocket of air surrounding Sarah which allowed her to remain conscious and communicate with the rescuers. He described it as an incredibly fortunate situation that contributed to their survival. Rescue efforts took approximately thirty minutes as crews worked diligently using their hands, shovels, and other tools to carefully dig out the trapped children. Eyewitnesses noted how precise and cautious each step was taken to avoid further injury or risk. Once freed, both girls were immediately transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for evaluation but fortunately, neither sustained severe injuries. Assistant Fire Chief Steve Klotz of the Tinley Park Fire Department confirmed this later. Attached are several images captured by Dylan Konchan showing the scene shortly after the incident occurred. What struck me most wasn’t just the bravery of those involved—both the victims and responders—but also how quickly everything happened. One moment they’re playing freely; the next, they’re fighting against nature itself. Thankfully, due to quick thinking and teamwork, everyone made it through safely. If anything positive comes out of such close calls, hopefully, it serves as a reminder about safety precautions around construction sites or any area where digging has taken place. Kids often don't fully grasp potential dangers until it’s too late. Perhaps this case will encourage parents everywhere to have open conversations with their little ones about staying safe outdoors. Let’s hope these families recover fully without lingering effects from what must have been quite traumatic experiences for all parties concerned. And hats off to our local firefighters and paramedics—they truly do incredible work every single day! --- [End of Post]
