To-Go Containers: It’s a Material Thing

We’re still exploring the truth about how various types of containers affect the environment. When designing MyGo Containers™, we thought of everything to ensure our design was environmentally friendly. The three R's—reduce, reuse, and recycle—are what drive most organizations to choose MyGo Containers™. While switching to reusable take-out containers isn’t solely about saving money, it often does. By adopting a reusable system, you can instantly cut down on the use and cost of disposable to-go packaging. Let’s examine the harsh reality of how different materials used in take-out containers negatively impact the environment. Plastics: In the U.S., only 9% of plastics are recycled, which is often referred to as “wish-cycling.” People hope their single-use items will be recycled, but this isn’t always the case. Even bioplastics made from renewable resources like palm leaves or bamboo contain chemicals, making them neither healthier nor truly compostable, creating numerous problems instead of solutions. Aluminum: Recycling aluminum uses just 5% of the energy required to produce new aluminum from bauxite. However, recycling aluminum releases several toxic chemicals into the environment. Additionally, recycling aluminum creates a highly toxic byproduct called “dross,” which needs to be carefully disposed of in landfills to avoid leakage and groundwater contamination. Styrofoam: Expanded polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam, is accepted at only a few recycling facilities. As a result, most foam food containers end up in landfills, where they persist indefinitely. Worse yet, they often wind up in rivers and streams. Styrofoam is rarely recycled, and when it is, it’s turned into something entirely different, not new foam containers. New foam containers must be made from virgin petroleum resources. Even if polystyrene recycling became widespread, producing new foam containers would remain unsustainable. Compostable: Although these popular “compostable” containers seem convenient, they don’t break down in an eco-friendly manner. In fact, as they decompose, they release harmful substances. Studies show that you shouldn’t even put them in your own compost due to the materials used to hold the container together. With MyGo Containers™, our containers are made from materials that can be reused at the end of their lifecycle.
