As the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" comes to an end, Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. has released a detailed report on its technological innovation achievements over the past five years. The company has filed a total of 219 invention patents, marking significant progress in breaking foreign technical monopolies and solving key industry challenges.
One major breakthrough was in the field of PTA (purified terephthalic acid) technology, where foreign companies had long held a monopoly. Shanghai Petrochemical successfully developed a full set of PTA equipment with an annual production capacity of 800,000 tons. This achievement not only shattered the foreign dominance but also saved the company approximately 330 million yuan in patent licensing and equipment costs. The technology includes 15 specialized techniques and 3 invention patents, demonstrating the company's strong R&D capabilities.
Another critical area of innovation was the utilization of carbon 5, a by-product of ethylene production. Traditionally considered a low-value waste material, carbon 5 was often treated as a "sleeping industry" due to its difficult refining process. Shanghai Petrochemical invested over 100 million yuan in independent research and development, overcoming technical barriers. Today, the company processes 60,000 tons of carbon 5 annually, with 85% of it being sold as chemical products. They have developed five types of high-tech fine chemicals, supported by 30 patents, covering areas such as rubber, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and environmentally friendly fuels. These products now account for 20% of the company’s total sales revenue through exports.
Previously, intermediate products from oil cracking were underutilized, resulting in a domestic crude oil utilization rate of about 70%. Through technological advancements, Shanghai Petrochemical has improved this significantly. Now, 95% of crude oil is converted into marketable products, with only 4% used as fuel. The processing loss has been reduced to just 1%, placing the company at the top of China's petrochemical industry in terms of efficiency.
In addition to these achievements, the company has made strides in developing palladium-carbon catalysts that extend service life from 12 to 40 months. It has also implemented on-line desulfurization technology for petroleum coke, making it suitable for power generation. Overall, during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, the 219 invention patents contributed nearly 1 billion yuan in added value to Shanghai Petrochemical, showcasing the tangible benefits of innovation and self-reliance.
