Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire in Bridgeport 12-31-11

This morning, shortly after 8 AM, the Chicago Fire Department responded to reports of black smoke billowing from a four-story warehouse located at 1427 West 37th Street. Initial units on the scene quickly upgraded the response to a 2-11 alarm within minutes. About half an hour later, the alarm was escalated further to a 3-11, and the fire was finally brought under control around 9:30 AM. The fire department deployed significant resources to tackle the blaze, including three tower ladders, the snorkel from Squad 1, one multi-purpose vehicle, and multiple hand lines. Seven engines—namely Engines 19, 28, 29, 39, 49, 50, and 65—were also dispatched to assist at the scene. Upon entering the building, crews discovered stacks of 55-gallon drums, prompting a request for a Level I Haz Mat response due to potential hazardous materials. However, it was later determined that the drums were empty, as the building is home to Higgins Brothers, Inc., a manufacturer of industrial drums and containers. Photos from the scene show Engine 29 hooked up to a hydrant, with Squad 1A and Tower Ladder 37 actively working in Sector 1. In another image, Squad 1 can be seen operating in the background while Engine 29 supplies them with water. Tower Ladder 5 was positioned at the rear of the building, while Tower Ladder 37 was set up at the southeast corner of the structure on 37th Street. Tower Ladder 39, operating with a spare unit, was stationed in an adjacent lot on the east side of the building in Sector 4. Once the fire was under control, firefighters entered the building through the rear to continue their efforts. The Tribune covered the incident, and you can read more about it [here](link). Photographers Larry Shapiro, Tim Olk, and others captured the event, and a full gallery of images is available [here](link). It was a challenging morning for the firefighters involved, but thanks to their swift action and coordination, the situation was managed effectively despite the complexity of the scenario.
