Last night, Chicago Engine 99 was called out to what initially seemed like a trash fire near the back of 3401 S. Lawndale Avenue, a site known for having guard dogs. However, upon arriving at the scene, the crew quickly realized the fire had spread inside the building. Engine 99 immediately requested a full-scale response, and the situation rapidly escalated to a Box Alarm. Thick, black smoke billowed out of the structure, clearly visible from multiple blocks away. When Deputy District 4-2 arrived, he reported fire extending through the roof and upgraded the alarm to a 2-11. The building, made of industrial bricks with a steel deck roof, presented a challenging scenario.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., who happened to be nearby, noticed the smoke from several blocks off. By the time he got there, firefighters were already cutting through the steel overhead doors to enter the burning building. He captured several images showing the progress of the firefighting efforts.
The first photos show intense flames licking through the roof and the massive plumes of smoke rising from within the structure. Firefighters are seen working hard to gain access, their determination evident as they cut through the reinforced barriers.
Once inside, the crews deployed both hand lines and elevated master streams. In one image, Engine 99’s deck gun is visible, spraying water onto the roof while other firefighters focus their efforts on containing the blaze from within. Another photo highlights the coordinated effort between different units—Squad 1, Tower Ladder 5, and Tower Ladder 54 all worked together using their master streams to douse the flames.
In another shot, the intensity of the fire is unmistakable, with a heavy flow of water being directed into the heart of the inferno. The scale of the operation becomes clear as two tower ladders and Squad 1’s snorkel are all in action, providing critical support alongside the deck gun and hand lines.
The final images capture the collaborative nature of firefighting, with multiple units working seamlessly together under difficult conditions. The smoke-filled atmosphere and the sheer size of the operation give a sense of the immense challenge faced by those involved.
