Last night, Chicago Engine 99 responded to what initially seemed like a rubbish fire near the back of 3401 S. Lawndale Avenue, an area known for having guard dogs. However, upon arrival, the crew quickly realized the fire had spread inside the building. Engine 99 immediately upgraded the situation to a working fire response, prompting a full Box Alarm. Thick black smoke billowed out of the structure, visible from multiple blocks away. When Deputy District 4 arrived, they confirmed fire through the roof and raised the alarm to a 2-11 status. The building, made of industrial bricks with a steel deck roof, presented significant challenges.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., who happened to be in the vicinity, noticed the smoke from several blocks away. As firefighters began cutting through the steel overhead doors to enter the building, he arrived on the scene and captured several images showing the progress of the firefighting efforts. One of the first photos shows the intense flames licking the roof and the thick plume of smoke rising from inside, with firefighters hard at work breaching the entry point. Another image captures firefighters directing a powerful hose line into the burning building once access was gained.
As the fire intensified, Engine 99 deployed their deck gun to combat the blaze while other units, including Snorkel 1, Tower 5, and Tower 54, utilized elevated master streams alongside multiple 2-1/2-inch hand lines. In one striking photograph, the deck gun from Engine 99 is clearly visible, pouring water onto the roof as other master streams prepared to join the effort. Inside, firefighters faced a massive volume of fire that had already penetrated the roof, requiring coordinated efforts from multiple pieces of equipment.
Another compelling shot highlights the teamwork involved in battling the blaze. Two tower ladders and Squad 1’s Snorkel worked in tandem with the deck gun from Engine 99 and numerous hand lines. The intensity of the flames is evident in this image, showcasing the dedication and skill of the firefighters as they worked tirelessly to control the situation. Throughout the night, these brave men and women demonstrated exceptional professionalism and coordination under challenging circumstances.
For those interested in more detailed visuals, Gordon has compiled a comprehensive gallery, available HERE. His photos provide a vivid depiction of the firefighting process, capturing both the scale of the challenge and the determination of the crews involved. It’s a testament to the resilience and expertise of Chicago’s firefighters, who face such situations head-on every day.
