Car crash at Kedzie and Thomas in Chicago

It was around 3 PM today (September 5, 2012) when I heard the sound of the Chicago Fire Department's sirens nearby. Curious, I followed the direction they took and decided to check it out for myself. As I arrived at the scene, I saw a car that had crashed into a utility pole, which had fallen onto the road. The impact also caused this car to collide with another vehicle parked nearby. The overhead power lines connected to the pole were lying on the ground, creating a hazardous situation. What caught my attention was that the driver who caused all this chaos had already fled the scene before the firefighters arrived. There was no immediate news about whether they were injured or not, but the airbag in their vehicle had clearly been deployed. Just as I finished taking some photos, Truck 36 from the fire department pulled up, and Ambulance 3 remained on standby. Interestingly, there was no sign of the Chicago Police Department being present at the time. The accident happened at the intersection of Kedzie Avenue and Thomas Street in Chicago. While I was there, I snapped several shots to document the aftermath. Here are my images, captured moments after the incident: [First Photo Caption] This photo shows the damaged utility pole and the tangled power lines strewn across the street. [Second Photo Caption] A closer look at the second car involved in the collision, which suffered significant damage. [Third Photo Caption] An overview of the entire scene, highlighting the chaos caused by the crash. [Fourth Photo Caption] Truck 36 arrives on the scene, ready to assist with any necessary emergency response. [Fifth Photo Caption] Another angle showing the aftermath of the crash and the fallen utility pole. [Sixth Photo Caption] A wider view of the intersection, illustrating the location of the accident. [Seventh Photo Caption] A final image capturing the overall impact of the crash on the surrounding area. These photos were taken by me, Martin Nowak, and provide an eyewitness account of what unfolded earlier today.
