On Tuesday, July 17th, 2018, the iconic golden pyramid-shaped house located at 37921 N Dilleys Road in Wadsworth caught fire, sending plumes of smoke and flames into the air. Known locally as "The Pyramid," this unusual structure was originally built as a private residence in the 1970s. Standing at six stories tall and covering an area of 17,000 square feet, it is surrounded by Egyptian-inspired statues and a decorative moat.
According to reports, the fire broke out around 4 p.m., and the elderly homeowner, who suffers from dementia, was inside the house in his wheelchair when the incident occurred. Thankfully, his caregiver and firefighters managed to evacuate him safely. Unfortunately, a beloved 15-year-old Yorkshire Terrier perished in the blaze.
The unique architecture of the pyramid presented significant challenges for the firefighters, making it difficult to control the spread of the flames. Fire officials described the situation as particularly intense due to a wind-driven fire that escalated dramatically on the fourth floor. This "mayday explosion" was likened to a blowtorch that knocked firefighters off their feet, resulting in injuries to two members of the Gurnee Fire Department.
Gurnee Battalion Chief David Douglas commented on the difficulty of fighting the fire, stating, "We’ve conducted walkthroughs of this building before and were aware of the challenges it posed. Today, those challenges became reality."
