MAN improves large engine efficiency

MAN Diesel & Turbo launched its ME-GI gas engine in Copenhagen, demonstrating a comprehensive technical solution for efficiency in two-stroke engines, the Waste Heat Recovery System (WHR), including its TCS-PTG turbine.

WHR utilizes exhaust gas energy and can be used to generate electricity to meet the electricity demand of ships. The WHR system is suitable for the full range of ME- and MC-engines from MAN Diesel & Turbo. In general, the greater the engine's output power, the greater the potential offered by the WHR and the faster the corresponding economic return. Therefore, conventional applications of WHR technology include container ships and power stations.

MAN Diesel & Turbo offers a complete WHR system service package including exhaust gas boilers, steam turbines and power turbine generator sets, PTO/PTI power output, and power management.

High load optimization is an important part of the WHR system, with the power turbine placed in parallel with the main engine's turbocharger and/or steam turbine to take advantage of the turbocharger's heat to exhaust the exhaust gases. When the load contains a power turbine and a steam turbine, the WHR system produces a maximum continuous power of up to 10%.

MAN Diesel & Turbo offers a wide range of WHR exhaust solutions:

Independent power turbine: PTG-powered turbine generator;

Independent steam turbine: STG-steam turbine generator;

Combined turbine: steam turbine - power turbine.

WHR system for container ships

The premise of the WHR system for container ships is that a larger exhaust duct system should be installed on the ship to ensure an even distribution of the exhaust gases within the boiler. The exhaust boiler itself requires a gas collector to control the exhaust gas flow rate and velocity profile, as well as to collect exhaust boiler wash water. MAN Diesel & Turbo recommends installing an exhaust bypass and an exhaust bypass valve in its exhaust boiler system.

For the WHR exhaust system, MAN Diesel & Turbo recommends that the shipyard use baffles and fluid dynamics to calculate and ensure an even distribution of gas velocity in the exhaust gas boiler. This is an important guarantee for the high efficiency of the WHR system. The back pressure calculation of the exhaust system is also essential to ensure proper operation of the WHR system. The correct speed of the gas through the exhaust boiler will ensure the function of the exhaust boiler is optimized and the risk of soot accumulation on its internal surfaces is minimized. When combined with a scrubbing system, the WHR system provides engine data for a higher back pressure exhaust system. This situation will be particularly common in new ships on the sulfur oxide emission control zone route.

Full service

MAN Diesel & Turbo offers a complete WHR system and designs the main engine, turbocharger, steam turbine and power turbine. The company optimizes and guarantees the performance of the WHR system during its cycle to shipyards and shipowners.

TCS-PTG

The TCS-PTG is the first new power turbine generator set developed by MAN Diesel & Turbo based on its TCR/TCA turbine. The company obtained its TCS-PTG system patent in 1957. MAN Diesel & Turbo presented the first TCS-PTG18 units in Copenhagen, which were assembled and tested in Germany and used in power projects in London, England.

London Power Turbine Order

In 2010, H. Cegielski-Poznan SA ordered two TCS-PTG18 power turbine systems to increase the efficiency of two environmentally friendly diesel power plants under the London-based renewable energy company Blue-NG. The power plant will be built by Land & Marine, each equipped with a MAN B&W 7K60MC-S engine to generate electricity with an output of 13.9 MW. Blue-NG is committed to building the world's best and most efficient power plants, and has spared no effort in optimizing the use of energy in these two cogeneration smart power plants.

MAN Diesel & Turbo's latest market-leading Efficient TCA Series turbochargers enable more waste gas to be transferred to power turbine-based energy recovery systems. In such applications, the power turbine is placed in parallel with the turbocharger in the exhaust system. The power turbine drives the generator through the gearbox, utilizing energy from up to 12% of the exhaust flow from the main engine.

The newly built two power plants will use the TCS-PTG18 unit to support the newly developed TCR18 high efficiency turbocharger. The high-efficiency high-speed transmission synchronizes the turbine speed with the generator speed, and the generator and gearbox are connected by a highly flexible coupling. The TCS-PTG18 unit will provide up to 570 kW of grid-connected power generation, increasing the overall efficiency of the power plant by 3 percentage points. When the engine load is low, the TCS-PTG unit will be shut down. Control valves and emergency shutdown quick response valves in the exhaust system ensure reliable and safe operation.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has more than 30 years of experience in the development, production and service of power turbines, as well as more than 50 reference project cases, mostly for marine applications. The London order is a milestone for the first project of a new generation of power turbines based on the new TCR series of superchargers.

As recent fuel price increases have made the overall system efficiency the focus of today's systems, MAN Diesel & Turbo has foreseen the huge market potential of TCS-PTG in diesel power plants and offshore engineering waste heat recovery applications. The company predicts that current public opinion concerns about carbon dioxide emissions and the company's focus on environmental issues in new projects will make this power turbine system an interesting choice.

Low temperature WHR

MAN Diesel & Turbo recently signed a partnership agreement with Opcon, a Swedish energy and environmental technology company, to combine Opcon's "Powerbox" WHR technology with MAN Diesel and Turbo diesel engines to reduce fuel consumption and reduce fuel consumption. emission. The two companies will study how to best recycle the waste heat energy from low-temperature heat sources in Opcon's Powerbox technology.

The first cooperation project between the two parties is the offshore application project of the Swedish shipping group Wallenius using waste heat power. This new ship will combine Opcon's Powerbox technology and MAN B&W 8S60ME-C8 two-stroke of MAN Diesel & Turbo. engine.

Compared to existing WHR units for higher temperatures and larger engines, Opcon's Powerbox can be combined with small engines. This has a direct impact on the performance of the vessel, reducing 5-10% of fossil fuel consumption during operation and directly reducing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur emissions.
