Wheeling (IL) house fire 2-12-11

This morning, the Wheeling Fire Department received an emergency call about a dryer fire at a residence located at 226 S. Fletcher Drive. The first responding units arrived to find light smoke emanating from the house. However, upon further inspection, they discovered active flames inside. Battalion 24 quickly escalated the situation to a Code 4, calling for mutual aid from neighboring departments including Buffalo Grove (Tower 25), Arlington Heights (Engine 4), and Long Grove (Ambulance 55). As firefighters prepared to enter the single-story, 50x25-foot ranch-style home, disaster struck when the fire flashed over. Despite the challenging conditions, the brave crew managed to bring the main blaze under control within just a few minutes. They then focused on extinguishing any remaining hotspots and conducting thorough overhaul procedures to ensure safety. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries during the incident. Photographer Larry Shapiro arrived shortly after the initial response and captured several compelling images and videos from the scene. One particularly striking photograph shows firefighters navigating through nearly 20 inches of snow left over from last week's massive blizzard that blanketed the Chicago area. Another powerful image reveals the intense moment when firefighters attempted to advance a hose through the front door as heavy smoke filled the air. Battalion Chief Dave Palmeri later explained that within the crucial five-to-seven-minute window before help arrived, extreme temperatures led to much of the structure catching fire spontaneously—a phenomenon known as auto-ignition. Thanks to the swift action of the firefighters, however, the entire operation was successfully completed in under 10 minutes. In closing, it’s clear that this incident highlights both the dangers faced by first responders every day and their incredible ability to handle crises swiftly and effectively. Let us all take a moment to express gratitude towards these courageous individuals who risk their lives daily to protect ours.
