River Forest garage fire 3-19-12

I just witnessed a small fire at a one-story wooden garage located at 111 Thatcher Street in River Forest. It happened around 9:45 AM today, and I followed the responding fire trucks from their stations. The garage measures 22 by 20 feet, and the fire initially broke out in the ceiling area. The firefighters managed to extinguish it quickly using a single 1.75-inch line, followed by thorough overhaul procedures. The first team on the scene included units from River Forest (E222, T221), Elmwood Park (E947), Forest Park (E402), and Oak Park (T631 and C620), along with several chiefs from both River Forest and Elmwood Park. Interestingly, River Forest's Truck 221 is actually the old Oak Park Truck 631 that was modified by River Forest to accommodate extra 4-inch hose, allowing them to forward-lay a supply line to Engine 222. Here’s how it unfolded: Initially, the garage appeared relatively intact before any firefighting action began. Once the attack line was charged and the garage opened up, firefighters stretched the line and prepared for action. They then proceeded to check the windows and side door, ensuring there was no immediate danger of the fire spreading. A firefighter was seen using a handline to directly hit the flames while another colleague worked on venting the roof. As the situation stabilized, the structure was opened further, revealing the construction materials inside. Elmwood Park's Engine 947 was also present, adding support to the operation. River Forest's Truck 221 played a crucial role in the scene, having been specifically modified to enhance its operational capabilities. River Forest Engine 222, a 2002 Darley model with a Spartan Gladiator chassis and an enclosed pump panel, was instrumental in managing water flow. Meanwhile, Forest Park Engine 402, a 2008 HME Ahrens Fox, added additional resources to the firefighting efforts. This incident showcased the teamwork and efficiency of multiple departments working together under pressure. Each unit brought unique strengths to the table, ensuring the fire was contained swiftly and safely. It was impressive to see how these professionals handled the situation with such precision and calmness. Overall, it was a textbook example of coordinated firefighting operations, highlighting the importance of preparation and communication among different fire departments in the region.
