Talk about Taiwan's auto luxury tax

In recent years, prices and housing prices in Taiwan have remained as high as the mainland. The disparity between the rich and the poor and the social M-type have become more and more serious. The government has come up with many crackdowns, increased mortgage interest rates, and investigated the monopoly of the market. The effect is very limited. In terms of housing prices, an ordinary Taipei office worker has to eat or drink for at least 30 years before he can buy a house in Taipei City. So the government can only show more tricks to crack down on these speculators. The latest move is actually auto luxury tax.

In fact, for a long period of time, Taiwan has almost regarded high-priced imported cars as monsters. In the early days of the restoration, the people had to import cars and could only import them for personal use in the name of overseas Chinese. In particular, after Yulong Motor was established in 1953, to protect the island's automobile industry, the government banned the import of Taiwan-produced models. The problem is that if it is not a high-priced luxury car produced in Taiwan, it is also blocked. In 1969, the relevant units had limited access to imported cars, but they had to be carefully scrutinized, and there were many quota restrictions, and 3000c. c. The above passenger cars are not allowed to import unless they are used by overseas Chinese or foreign students for personal use, otherwise they will be 3000c. c. The above vehicles are not available (at that time, Taiwan did not produce cars exceeding 3000c.c).

It was not until 1981 that it was fully open to 3000c. c. The above car imports, coupled with the take-off of Taiwan's economy, at this time the import of car dealers springing up. However, the taxes on imported vehicles are quite heavy. Even in the 1990s, Toyota AVALON (Asian Dragon), which had a price of less than 20,000 U.S. dollars to land in North America, had come to Taiwan to offer a price of two and a half times! Since Taiwan's accession to the WTO in 1997, the amount of tax and the tax rate have gradually decreased. However, in reality, the government often finds various kinds of tricks to collect taxes, so local consumers do not really benefit much from it.

In fact, such import tariffs can be regarded as a luxury tax on imported vehicles, and in particular, the calculation basis for the different levels of displacement is based on the amount of exhaust gas. Although rough, most FOB vehicle prices are proportional to the amount of exhaust gas. However, the "luxury automobile tax" that has emerged recently has appeared to be "secondary". The name of the United States is to reconcile the gap between the rich and the poor. In fact, it is another trick to open up the government's financial resources.

According to this provision, starting from July 1, 2011, minibuses sold in Taiwan, whose selling price exceeds NT$3 million (approximately RMB 650,000), must be subject to a 10% luxury tax. This benchmark and the content of the levy seem to be the price increase of 3.0 cars or more caused by the consumption tax increase in the mainland in September 2008. However, the follow-up reaction in mainland China proves that the more expensive a car is, the more people are willing to buy it. This is because it is better able to “show status” and the same situation will not happen in Taiwan.

In fact, the new cars are more expensive than the old ones, but the better-selling examples have been seen in Taiwan. In 2004, the BMW E60 5 series was published in Taiwan. The quotation of the BMW E60 5 series was much larger than that of the E39 after the small-scale reform. The entry-level 520i went up from the original NT$2.05 million to about 2.4 million, and it escalated by nearly 20% in one breath. Others such as the 525i, 530i, and 545i are more expensive than rivals Mercedes-Benz W211. However, after this price was reported, it has always been the E-Class level, and immediately changed to E60 as the chief, causing people to break their glasses. The BMW Taiwan agent, the Pan-German company, not only relied on this increase in sales price, but also successfully upgraded the E60 5-Series image to a higher level than the W211.

With this case, after the implementation of the auto luxury tax in July this year, it will not let more than NT$3 million become a new object of display, and it is worthy of attention. However, at the moment when the policy was finalized, there was an immediate response from car dealers. Acting as a rare brand, “Saint Vincent”, a symbolic reduction of one dollar for Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari, which was quoted at just under NT$3 million, and many local imported car dealers already earned a vote as a result of the implementation of this policy. The auto asking price above the tax threshold is quite enthusiastic. Car dealers will try to catch the delivery schedule before July 1st; many parallel importers will step up their operations, and it is imperative that they be well-fed before this regulation is passed. One such event is just like the eve of the suspension of production of the Mercedes-Benz W140 (the so-called "Tiger-headed" in the Mainland). Taiwanese Mercedes-Benz agents and merchants are "like each other".

<The car is not the protagonist of the depreciation of one dollar but the FIAT 500 Abarth, also represented by Saint Vincent>

In fact, the author thinks that the effect of this tax on luxury tax for cars is very limited. For people who can afford to spend NT$3 million to buy a car, more than 10% is just like the annual increase in the prices of imported automakers. After the policy is on the road, it will surely become a kind of medium: "I can afford it. This is money, so I really doubt that there are ways to allow consumers to move to buy lower-priced vehicles. And if you really want to punish the wealthy people, instead of taxing 3 million cars, you might as well start taking 300,000 branded bags: If you say a car with more than 3 million, it will usually take a year or two to change hands. , but a 300,000 brand-name bag, how to "get out of the game", at most three times, or certainly gossip, but also have to worry about "bumps", the degree of "luxury" is absolutely ten times more expensive than yours The car is one grade higher.

Of course, the relevant authorities should not be so stupid as this policy can receive the effect of "proclaimed", and certainly have a good idea. However, being able to name the financial resources in this way should be an abacus for this group of officials to fight!
