On March 31, 2008, the third session of the Shanghai International Starch and Starch Products Exhibition was officially launched at the Shanghai Mart, located at No. 99 Xingyi Road in Shanghai. Organized by the China Starch Industry Association and the Shanghai Science and Technology Development and Exchange Center, with support from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, the event was hosted by Shanghai Zhongyu Exhibition Service Co., Ltd. The exhibition ran for three days, closing on April 2, and featured a wide range of industry participants.
As one of Asia's most respected and specialized exhibitions, the Shanghai International Starch Exhibition has consistently emphasized internationalization, branding, and specialization. This year’s event attracted over 200 renowned companies from around the world, including major players like COFCO, U.S. Corn Products, Shandong Golden Corn, Novozymes, Westphalia, Mitsubishi Corporation, and many others. The exhibition showcased cutting-edge products and technologies, covering raw starch, modified starch, starch sugar, sugar alcohols, enzymes, processing equipment, and eco-friendly solutions. The exhibition area spanned more than 7,000 square meters, reflecting the comprehensive scope of the starch industry.
According to Ms. Dong Yanfeng, Secretary-General of the China Starch Industry Association, global starch production reached nearly 50 million tons annually, with the United States leading at about 30 million tons. China ranks second globally, producing nearly 13.5 million tons in 2007. Notably, China's corn starch technology has reached international standards. This year’s exhibition saw a significant increase in potato starch producers, driven by the success of China’s anti-dumping case and rising prices. The starch industry plays a vital role in various sectors, including food, pharmaceuticals, textiles, construction materials, and feed.
To foster collaboration between research institutions, universities, and starch companies, a dedicated "New Technology Transfer Area" was introduced during the exhibition, offering a platform for showcasing and exchanging innovative projects. Additionally, the "2008 Shanghai International Biological Fermentation and Alcohol Technology Exhibition" provided further opportunities for industry networking and business development.
Professor Zhao Jixiang, an advisor to the China Starch Industry Association, delivered a keynote speech titled "Implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development to Innovate a New Situation in the Starch Industry." Over the course of the event, more than ten expert-led seminars and theme discussions were held, featuring on-site consultations and knowledge sharing. The exhibition not only highlighted China’s achievements in the starch sector but also served as a crucial platform for international and domestic exchanges, trade, and cooperation. It proved to be an essential event for manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users seeking to stay ahead in this dynamic industry.
