Huntsman recently revealed plans to construct a 400,000-ton-per-year MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) plant at its facility in Rozenburg, the Netherlands. The company has already initiated feasibility studies and begun the design process for the new unit. This expansion marks a significant step in Huntsman’s long-term strategy to strengthen its global MDI production capabilities.
The project will leverage Huntsman’s proprietary technologies, including aniline, methylenediamine (MDA), and MDI, across all three of its major production sites. Compared to traditional methods, the new technology is expected to improve raw material efficiency and boost energy efficiency by up to 40%. This advancement not only supports cost savings but also aligns with the company’s sustainability goals.
In addition, in 2006, Huntsman and its parent company conducted a joint evaluation for a second MDI unit in Shanghai, with an annual capacity of 240,000 tons. Although the project is still under review, it reflects the company’s continued interest in expanding its footprint in key markets. With ongoing research and development, Huntsman remains committed to enhancing its production processes and maintaining its leadership in the polyurethane industry.
