Maersk built 7 high-speed container ships

According to the Clarkson Ship Registry's reference to the Lloyd’s Register of Ships, Moller-Maersk previously ordered seven 4170-container B-type vessels from the Volkswerft Stralsund shipyard in Germany. These ships are reported to have a maximum speed of 29.2 knots, making them among the fastest civilian container ships. If the information is accurate, these vessels could potentially be recognized as the world’s fastest container ships. Each of the seven ships has a gross tonnage of 51,000 tons and is powered by an engine capable of propelling a vessel twice their size. This high-performance setup results in a daily fuel consumption of approximately 260 tons. Maersk plans to deploy these new ships for express services between the Far East and New York, although the company has not officially commented on the report. If true, this development contradicts the current trend among shipping companies to reduce speeds in order to save fuel and lower emissions. The industry has been moving toward slower, more efficient operations in response to environmental and economic pressures. Currently, the fastest container ships in the world are eight 6555-container vessels built by Hyundai Heavy Industries for Hanjin Shipping, with a top speed of 27 knots. However, there was a previous attempt at high-speed container shipping: in the early 2000s, Scandinavian Airlines (Switzerland) developed two "pencil" ships, one of which was constructed at the Shanghai Hudong Shipyard. These vessels were equipped with medium-speed engines and operated on routes between Asia and Northern Europe, with limited stopovers. Despite their innovative design, they faced technical challenges, particularly with engine overheating during long voyages, which ultimately led to their withdrawal from service.
