Hangzhou Bay Bridge fluoridated carbon coating for its early glorification

The Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge, the world's longest sea-crossing bridge, is set to officially open in the first half of this year, as per the instructions of the Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge Project. This significant infrastructure development will also serve as a key route for the Olympic torch relay, which is scheduled to pass through Hangzhou in May. The bridge stretches from Jiaxing City to Ningbo’s Shuixiwan, spanning the wide mouth of the Hangzhou Bay and covering a total length of 36 kilometers. It surpasses both the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the U.S. and the Bahrain Road embankment in Saudi Arabia, making it the longest cross-sea bridge globally. Completed on June 26 last year, the bridge is a six-lane, two-way highway with a design speed of 100 km/h. Once fully operational, it will cut down the travel distance between Shanghai and Ningbo by 120 kilometers. Previously, drivers had to take an “L”-shaped route via the Shanghai-Hangzhou and Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressways, taking approximately four hours at 80 km/h. With the new bridge, the journey will be shortened by about 1.5 hours, significantly improving regional connectivity and travel efficiency. The project involved more than 7,000 piles, including over 4,000 steel piles drilled underwater. Its scale has broken multiple domestic bridge construction records. In terms of engineering innovation, the bridge has achieved several world-firsts. It was the first in China to specify a design life of over 100 years, raised the transport capacity from 900 tons to 1,430 tons—setting a global record—and successfully implemented the "secondary tensioning technology" for the first time in China. Additionally, the use of spiral steel pipe piles, with a maximum diameter of 1.6 meters and a single pile length of 89 meters, ranks among the largest in bridge construction worldwide. The project also introduced a safe and controlled construction method for bored piles in mudflat areas, a pioneering technique in similar geographical conditions. Since its completion, the Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge Engineering Command has been working on follow-up projects, including the bridge deck pavement and coating works. According to the Fluorine Coatings Committee of the China Chemical Society, most of the coatings used are fluorocarbon resin-based, known for their excellent weather resistance. Major suppliers include companies like Ningbo Dongsheng Technology Development, Dalian Zhenbang Fluor Co., Ltd., and Beijing Aerospace Material Co., Ltd. These high-quality coatings not only protect the structure but also add vibrant color to the bridge, enhancing its visual appeal and contributing to the overall aesthetic of the project.
