Hydrogenated ethanol reforming hydrogen-rich fuel engine was born

In early January, Hubei Dongfeng Motor Company made a breakthrough by successfully testing a "hydrogen-rich ethanol reforming" technology for fuel engines. This innovation allows the company to run its first own-brand ethanol-powered vehicle on the road. According to recent reports, Hubei Province is set to launch a new energy pilot project this year—introducing high-purity ethanol gasoline that will increase ethanol content from 10% to 65%. Alongside this initiative, Dongfeng will start construction on a 200 million yuan ethanol production base, which is expected to drive growth in biomass energy and automotive industries, potentially creating billions in new economic value. Experts at Dongfeng explained that the "hydrogen-rich ethanol reforming" system works by adding an aqueous ethanol reformer and control system without modifying standard engines. The company has already converted many vehicles, including two taxis that have completed 80,000 kilometers using either regular ethanol gasoline or 65% ethanol blends. In the next phase, Dongfeng plans to retrofit or produce 100 flexible-fuel taxis capable of running on both ethanol and traditional gasoline. Under China’s current standards, ethanol gasoline typically contains only 10% ethanol. However, Dongfeng’s newly developed engine uses 65% ethanol to generate hydrogen-rich gas, significantly lowering costs and energy consumption. This advancement boosts overall economic efficiency by up to 60%. To support this innovation, Dongfeng will invest 200 million yuan to build a production and demonstration base, including a new ethanol engine design and testing center, car assembly line, and testing facility. A small-scale market launch is anticipated by the end of the year. According to officials from the Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the province currently produces 1.31 million tons of ethanol gasoline annually, saving around 130,000 tons of gasoline. With the introduction of high-proportion ethanol fuel, annual savings could reach nearly 90,000 tons, while also boosting the emerging automobile and biomass energy sectors with an estimated annual output value of several billion yuan. During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, Hubei aims to establish two fuel ethanol production bases, each with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons.
