China's one-million-ton PTA equipment is urgently needed for localization

Due to the expansion of market demand and rising oil prices, the market price of PTA has also been rising in recent years. At present, the price of PTA in the domestic market is 12,000 yuan per ton. According to relevant statistical data, China is currently the world's largest PTA market. In 2005, it consumed more than 10 million tons, of which about 52% was supplied by the domestic market. It is expected that by 2010, the demand will reach 17 million tons.

After entering the 21st century, China's PTA industry has developed rapidly, and both production capacity and production have increased substantially. In 2001, China's PTA production was less than 2.2 million tons, and by 2005 it had reached approximately 5.5 million tons, with an average annual growth rate of more than 25%. In spite of this, domestic production still cannot meet the strong demand, and the supply gap has not only narrowed but has grown bigger. In 2005, the import volume was close to 6.5 million tons.

Multinationals speed up the pace of landing

In recent years, international giants have taken the lead in China's PTA industry. After Zhuhai BP's second phase project is completed, BP's PTA production capacity in China will reach 1 million tons per year, forming a three-pronged position with Yangzi and Xianglu.

It is understood that Zhuhai BP will build 4 sets of PTA production facilities in the future, with a production capacity of 2.5 million tons/year or more, and will become the world's largest PTA production base. Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals Corporation invests US$300 million to build a 600,000-ton/year PTA production facility in Zhangjiagang, which will be completed and put into production in 2007, and will be expanded by 600,000 tons/year by 2010, so that the PTA production capacity will reach 1.2 million tons. /year. The 600,000-ton/year PTA production facility jointly built by Jiangsu Sanfangxiang Group and Taiwan Tenglong Group has an investment of 600 million U.S. dollars. In June of this year, Mitsubishi Chemicals and CITIC Group invested approximately US$1 billion in Daihatsu Mitsubishi's PTA project with an annual output of 2.6 million tons.

Domestic production capacity continues to expand

At present, leading domestic PTA companies, including Jiangsu Yizheng Chemical Fiber Company and Yangzi Petrochemical Company, continue to expand their production capacity.

It is understood that Yizheng Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd. has an existing PTA capacity of 900,000 tons/year and plans to build a new 900,000 tons/year PTA production facility by 2008. Yangzi Petrochemical Company is building a new 450,000-ton/year PTA production facility and the capacity will reach 1.2 million tons/year after completion. According to statistics, by 2010, the total capacity of PTA in Jiangsu Province will reach 4.8 million tons/year or more, accounting for 35.5% of China's PTA production capacity, and it will become China's PTA production province.

In addition, Sinopec's PTA production capacity exceeds 2.5 million tons/year and has become the world's second-largest PTA producer after BP (BP's PTA total capacity is 6.5 million tons/year).

At present, 70% of China's PTA production is concentrated in PetroChina and Sinopec's two major group companies. The other 30% are produced by joint venture Xiamen Xianglu and wholly-owned Zhuhai BP. In recent years, the continuous rise in global oil prices, coupled with the fierce expansion of capacity in the chemical fiber industry, has caused the supply of raw materials such as PTA to become tight. This has created an opportunity for a large number of private enterprises to enter the petrochemical industry.

China's PTA industry is still uncertain

Some experts said that in recent years, investment in PTA industry should be soberly aware that China's PTA industry in all aspects of the controlled by others. Since China's overall petrochemical industry is relatively backward, and the PX and hydrocarbon equipment supporting capacity corresponding to the development of PTA industry is weak, the issue of being subject to foreign petrochemical raw material producers in the raw material sector is very prominent. Therefore, once overheated investment occurs, it will be possible. Bring the PTA industry into a vicious circle of serious oversupply.

Some experts also believe that China's PTA industry looks very promising and that manufacturers are also very active in investment, but there is doubt as to whether there is a large-scale increase in demand. Coupled with the unclear corporate profitability and uncertainties, China's PTA industry is still uncertain.

Some experts believe that in the mid-1990s, the capacity of large-scale PTA installations was 500,000 tons/year. After adopting new technologies from BP or Sinopec, the capacity of large-scale installations could be doubled, and production costs and investment costs can be reduced. However, the construction of extra-large facilities also means an increase in the risk of the company.

In order to prevent oversupply of PTA projects and oversupply, as well as the impact on the supply of raw materials such as xylene, the relevant government departments have strengthened the approval of PTA projects. Relevant departments reminded the PTA industry to pay attention to lessons learned from the disorderly development of production capacity in some industries and carefully grasp the new project plan. Experts pointed out that governments, industries, and companies must calmly face the upsurge of investment in PTA, and fully consider the limitations of PTA upstream raw materials, insufficient downstream start-ups and high production technology costs, and use an objective and long-term perspective to analyze the market.

It is urgent to speed up the pace of localization of a one-million-ton device with independent PTA technology

PTA is a capital-intensive and technology-intensive industry. Domestic investment in this project requires at least 2 billion yuan, and the construction period usually takes 2 to 3 years. For a long time, the Chinese petrochemical industry has always been taking the road of introduction.

Since the beginning of the development of the polyester industry in China in the late 1970s, nearly 20 sets of PTA devices have been built one after another. Basically, they have introduced foreign patented technologies. At present, the PTA complete set of technology is mainly controlled by the British BP Oil Company, German DuPont Company and Japan Mitsui Petrochemicals, etc., and the existing domestic technologies and equipment are all imported. With only one patent fee, China will have to pay $30 for every 1 ton of product produced in the country.

China already has its own PTA technology

In order to change the passive situation in which technology is controlled by people, in early 2000, PTA's domestically-completed technology development project was listed as a project of Sinopec's “Ten Dragon” project, and Yangzi Petrochemical was the team leader of the PTA complete technology development project. The implementation of this technology will not only greatly reduce the energy consumption and energy consumption of Yangzi Petrochemical's old PTA installations, but also increase the technological content of the installations. It will also signify that Sinopec has matured PTA complete sets of technologies with independent intellectual property rights. Yangzi Petrochemical's PTA plant introduced US patented technology in 1978 and was completed and put into production in 1989. It was the largest 450,000-ton/year PTA plant in China at the time.

Not long ago, Yangzi Petrochemical's PTA energy-saving process design was reviewed by Sinopec. According to the review, this PTA complete set of technology, which has filed 48 national patents and granted 26 items and filled a number of achievements to fill gaps in the country, already possesses industrialized conversion conditions.

In addition, Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. announced a major breakthrough in the localization of PTA technology. Its annual production capacity of 800,000 tons of technology packages and complete sets of technology has passed the technical acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology and reached the international advanced level. For the first time, this technology has broken the monopoly of a few large foreign companies. It is reported that this complete set of technology contains 15 proprietary technologies and 3 invention patents, breaking the monopoly of foreign companies in the field of polyester raw materials, and completely ending the history of Chinese PTA technology dependence on imports. At present, this technology has been transferred to foreign countries, and it is planned to invest in engineering applications. It is expected that it will save about 190 million yuan in technology patent introduction fees and 140 million yuan in equipment investment.

PTA device energy saving task is arduous

According to Xiang Hanyin, chairman of the China PTA Industry Association, according to the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, the energy consumption per unit of GDP of the national economy should be reduced by about 20%. The tasks placed before the PTA industry are arduous, and the PTA's old devices have great potential for energy saving. .

According to reports, Yangzi Petrochemical used this technology to perform "surgery" on the old device. The major technical and economic indicators of the device have been significantly improved. PTA energy consumption will be reduced from 280 kg of standard oil/ton to 150 kg of standard oil/ton. According to the current market price estimate, this alone can save nearly 300 million yuan in manufacturing costs each year. At the same time, a large amount of non-renewable resources are saved and the amount of greenhouse gas emissions is reduced.

At present, most of China's PTA production enterprises are built along the coast of the Yangtze River and along the coast, and there is a large-scale environmental risk. In the production process of PTA, it also prominently shows the consumption and pollution of water. SEPA inspections of multiple sets of PTA devices indicate that there are many problems such as risk prevention measures and imperfect risk contingency plans.

Megaton PTA equipment is difficult to manufacture

Wu Xigong, executive director of the China PTA Industry Association, believes that the contradiction between investment growth and operating losses in China's PTA industry is increasingly prominent. On the one hand, the self-sufficiency rate of domestic PTA products is less than 50%. The recent investment in construction of new PTA installations is growing rapidly. On the other hand, the overall profitability of the domestic PTA industry is reduced, and some companies are not profitable in individual months. According to reports, the main problems in China's PTA industry are: the localization rate of key technologies and equipment is not high; the cost of technology introduction and equipment introduction is high, resulting in higher unit PTA product cost and weaker competitiveness compared with foreign products.

Wu Xiegong pointed out that the newly-constructed PTA device should adopt localized technology and equipment as far as possible in order to reduce investment costs and improve competitiveness.

Zhou Xiangjin, secretary-general of the China PTA Industry Association, told reporters that at present, the localization rate of PTA technology and equipment in China has reached 80%, but the problems faced by domestically produced equipment are mainly due to lack of performance. Therefore, it takes time to enter the market to obtain the trust of customers.

After long-term use of PTA's major equipment and machinery manufacturing companies' technology accumulation, it is feasible to achieve large-scale PTA process technology and localization of major equipment through scientific research, design, manufacturing, and user cooperation. However, the major million-ton PTA is mainly The difficulty of manufacturing equipment is still considerable. At present, there is no domestic case for manufacturing such large-scale equipment, and it is necessary to mobilize all aspects of technical force, carefully organize, design and manufacture, and strictly control quality.

Oxidation reactor: In the past, domestic PTA plant oxidation reactors were imported from abroad, belonging to foreign patented equipment, in particular, stirrer and gas-liquid distributor is its key technology. Air Compressor Units: Generally divided into single-axis units consisting of single-axis compressors and multi-axis units consisting of gear-type compressors. The single-axis unit consists of a high-pressure air compressor, a low-pressure air compressor, a turboexpander, and a steam turbine. The multi-axis unit consists of a multi-shaft compressor, a turboexpander, and a steam turbine. Air compressors for PTA units and Shenyang Blower Group have mature technologies. The existing problem is that there is currently no design or manufacturing technology for heavy-duty expansion turbines for sinking drums, and they need to be supplied by other manufacturers. The axial compressor developed and produced by the Shaanxi Blower Group can also meet the requirements of large-scale PTA installations. In addition, the plant also has technologies for designing and manufacturing exhaust gas recovery turbines.

Rotary dryers: Two types of oxidation dryers and refining dryers. Domestic Tianhua Chemical Machinery Research & Design Institute has its own proprietary technology and years of R&D experience. In recent years, the Institute, Nanhua Machinery Plant and Jinxi Chemical Plant have provided products for Yanshan Petrochemical Polyethylene, Yizheng Chemical Fiber PTA Plant, and Luoyang Petrochemical PTA Plant. For a million-ton-class PTA rotary dryer, although there are many difficulties in manufacturing and transportation, there is still a certain basis for domestic design and manufacturing.

Pressure Centrifuge: Chongqing Jiangbei Machinery Factory and Jilin Chemical Machinery Factory have their own design software and have carried out the development of a series of centrifuges. In addition, Shanghai Petrochemical Machinery Manufacturing Co. and Liaoyang Chemical Fibre Machinery Plant also developed pressure centrifuges for the PTA plant. However, these manufacturers have not developed large-diameter, high-speed vertical centrifugal decentralized differential centrifuge experience, the need for the organization of targeted research and development.

Other equipment: including crystallizers, heat exchangers, condensers, filters, hydrogenation reactors, etc., made of low-carbon stainless steel, composite titanium, duplex stainless steel, chromium molybdenum steel. Nanhua Company Machinery Plant, Jinzhou Heavy Machinery Plant, Jinxi Chemical Plant, Fushun Machinery Plant, and Shanghai Dalong Machinery Plant all have long-term manufacturing experience.
