What Are the Production Steps for Casing and Tubing Pup Joints?
Casing and tubing pup joints are essential components in oil and gas drilling operations. They are used to connect different sections of pipe, ensuring a secure and leak-free connection. The production process involves several critical steps that ensure quality, durability, and compliance with industry standards. Here’s an overview of the key stages involved in manufacturing these important parts.
Upsetting
Upset forging is a crucial step in the production of pup joints. It involves increasing the cross-sectional area at each end of a plain-end blank. This process enhances the strength and integrity of the joint. At our facility, we have introduced automation into our handling table system, which significantly improves safety and precision. This innovation allows us to produce pup joints with greater consistency and accuracy, meeting even the most demanding specifications.
Hydro Testing
After upsetting, all pup joints undergo hydro testing. This non-destructive test uses water pressure to check for leaks. Our advanced hydro testing equipment is fully adjustable, allowing us to accommodate various lengths and pressures as required by API standards and customer specifications. This ensures that every product is safe, reliable, and ready for use in the field.
Full Body Ultrasonic Inspection
We have developed a custom and fully automated Full Body Ultrasonic Inspection system to examine our tubing pup joints. As one of the first companies in the industry to implement this technology, we can detect any surface or internal defects—whether longitudinal or transverse. This inspection method offers higher accuracy compared to other non-destructive tests due to its strong penetration power, which allows it to identify deep-seated flaws. Its high sensitivity also enables the detection of even the smallest imperfections, guaranteeing the highest quality products for our customers.
Profiling
In addition to upset forging, we also produce pup joints by profiling from heavy-wall mechanical tubing. This process is carried out on a high-precision CNC machine, ensuring tight dimensional tolerances and an excellent surface finish. This level of precision is essential for maintaining the structural integrity and performance of the final product.
Special End Area Inspection
To further ensure quality, we perform a wet magnetic particle inspection on the special end areas of the pup joints. This non-destructive test is effective in identifying surface and near-surface defects, such as cracks or other irregularities. We inspect both longitudinal and transverse areas to ensure complete coverage and reliability.
Heat Treatment
Each pup joint is heat-treated individually using a specially designed line. This setup is flexible and adaptable, allowing us to adjust for different lengths and requirements. After heat treatment, all pup joints are re-straightened to maintain their shape and quality. This step is vital in ensuring that the final product meets the highest standards of performance and durability.
By following these rigorous production steps, we ensure that every casing and tubing pup joint we produce is of the highest quality, built to last, and ready for the most challenging environments in the oil and gas industry.
