University Laboratory Vacuum Short Path Distillation
Short path evaporators are available in sizes ranging from 0.04 to 80 m² and can operate at temperatures up to 400°C.

Short path distillation is a specialized form of thin film distillation technology that allows for even lower working pressures and consequently, even lower boiling temperatures. This makes it ideal for heat-sensitive materials and high molecular weight compounds.

Unlike traditional wiped film evaporators, the condenser in a short path evaporator is located inside the unit itself. This design helps reduce the distance that vapors must travel, which contributes to more efficient operation and improved performance.

Operation

The feed liquid is introduced into the still under high vacuum and quickly spreads into a very thin film across the evaporation surface. The heated walls and high vacuum environment drive the more volatile components (distillate) toward the external condenser, while the less volatile components (residue) flow down the cylinder. The separated fractions then exit through individual discharge outlets. Depending on the application, either the distillate or residue may be the desired product. Small amounts of condensable low molecular weight compounds collect in a cold trap upstream of the vacuum system. For higher solvent loads, an optional external condenser can be installed downstream of the still.
