Comprehensive foreign news report on April 22, the U.S. government plans to announce a proposal on the 22nd to increase the fuel economy standards for new cars and trucks, so that the United States will reach a target of 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
The plan will set fuel economy standards for 2011 to 2015 and is expected to be finalized before the end of the Bush administration. A spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation declined to comment.
The current fuel standards for new passenger cars require an average of 27.5 mpg, while SUVs, trucks and vans need to reach 22.5 mpg.
Congressional and environmental agency members had asked for a higher standard, believing that requiring cars to be more energy-efficient would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the United States’ dependence on imported oil.
Automobile manufacturers have been opposed to raising the standard for the past few years, but they have supported legislation as a result of rising gasoline prices and worries about global warming. The new bill is expected to promote the automotive industry to produce more hybrid vehicles.
