Gary Fire Department news

Excerpts from NWITimes.com:

The Gary Fire Department is set to see significant upgrades in the coming year, with millions of dollars in planned improvements. Recently, the department acquired new ambulances, and Fire Chief Paul Bradley has expressed hope that additional fire engines and an aerial ladder will soon be added to their fleet.

A recent $758,044 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program has been allocated to purchase 133 self-contained breathing apparatus units, helping to better equip firefighters for hazardous situations.

Besides this, the city is also applying for another grant to purchase a new ladder truck, which could cost between $700,000 and $1 million. Currently, the department operates with three active ladder trucks, while one is undergoing repairs.

For years, the department has struggled with both equipment shortages and staffing issues. However, recent efforts have started to show positive results, according to local observers.

In 2010, under Mayor Rudy Clay, 35 firefighter positions were cut, reducing the force from 236 to 201 members. The cuts led to protests in 2014 and again in early 2023, as firefighters and police officers alike raised concerns over poor pay and outdated equipment, which contributed to staff leaving for better-paying jobs elsewhere.

Today, the department has 187 firefighters, and last year, salary increases were approved. Adam Friday, vice president of the Gary Firefighters Association Local 359, believes the situation is improving. In addition to raises that may eventually boost annual salaries by $10,000, he notes that equipment has seen considerable improvements.

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, who took office recently, acknowledged that the department was previously underfunded and under-resourced. “We’ve worked closely with the chiefs each year to secure more funding,” she said. “They’ve also taken initiative in seeking out additional resources.”

One example of progress is a new company that has improved the collection of ambulance service fees, allowing the department to invest in new emergency vehicles.

Despite these improvements, some challenges remain. One key issue is the need for a permanent station for Station 5 firefighters, who have been working out of temporary facilities for years. Fire Chief Bradley confirmed that federal funds have been secured for a new fire station on Pennsylvania Street, and he hopes construction will begin this year. He also mentioned that station furnishings have been upgraded.

Another ongoing concern is the need for more personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies to maintain it. These items are crucial for protecting firefighters from dangerous chemicals and other hazards.

Mayor Freeman-Wilson is collaborating with department leaders, union representatives, and the city council to create hybrid public safety roles that combine police and firefighting duties. While the positions are still being developed, Fire Chief Bradley noted that some firefighters have shown interest. These roles could offer higher pay and opportunities for skill development, making them attractive to potential candidates.

Thanks, Dennis

Crawler Compost Turner

The Compost Turner has the dual functions of mixing and crushing, which is very suitable for soil remediation and microbial fermentation of chicken, cattle, sheep, pigs, and other livestock and poultry fresh manure and sewage plant sludge. Mix livestock and poultry manure, sludge with microbial preparation and straw auxiliary materials evenly. It creates a better aerobic environment for material fermentation. It can be heated up in one day, deodorized, sterilized in two days (can completely kill the bird flu virus in the feces), dry in three days, and fertilizer in 7-15 days. It is not only faster than other mechanical equipment fermentation methods, but also more efficient. It also effectively prevents the generation of harmful and malodorous gases such as hydrogen sulfide, amine gas, and indole during the fermentation process, which not only meets the requirements of environmental protection, but also produces high-quality bio-organic fertilizers in large quantities.

The TAGRM crawler-type organic composte turner, equipped with a high-horsepower engine and a multi-functional hydraulic roller, can cope with a more complex working environment than the wheeled type.
