Ethanol Gasoline Provoked in the United States

A prominent US consumer law firm recently stated that Exxon Mobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, Valero, ConocoPhillips and other major oil companies are facing a lawsuit. The firm has accused the United States District Court and the California Central District Court in Los Angeles of the production and sale of ethanol by these oil companies. The blending of gasoline has damaged marine fuel tanks, engines and other components.
Brian Kabateck, an attorney for the lawsuit, said that the current price of oil has been unacceptable. At the same time, these ethanol blended gasoline are corroding the fuel tank. Oil companies know that this type of ethanol blending fuel is corrosive, but they deceive consumers for their own personal advantage, leaving consumers spending a lot of money on maintenance. It is reported that ExxonMobil’s earnings in 2007 set a record for U.S. companies’ profit, reaching US$40.6 billion. Chevron’s profits also reached US$18.7 billion.
In order to increase the octane number of gasoline, oil companies add additives to gasoline over a long period of time. Before 2004 in the United States, MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) was widely used as a gasoline additive. With the US states having successively introduced environmental regulations that banned MTBE, oil companies began to select ethanol as a gasoline additive. Consumers have never been told the difference between MTBE and ethanol blended gasoline, and they have not been told that ethanol has caused serious damage to the marine fuel tank made of fiberglass material.
Glass fiber is widely used in the manufacture of marine fuel tanks. Ethanol dissolves this glass fiber material, causing damage to the fuel tank. In addition, the dissolved material enters the fuel system, causing damage to the engine and other components.
Because of phase separation, ethanol blended gasoline has a particularly severe impact on the shipping environment. When the ethanol blended gasoline absorbs enough water, the ethanol and the aqueous solution are separated from the gasoline (phase separation), the gasoline is located in the upper layer of the ethanol aqueous solution, and the water containing the high concentration of ethanol is located in the bottom layer of the fuel tank and is made of glass fiber. The fuel tank was particularly damaged, resulting in the eventual leaking of the fuel tank and the gasoline entering the water system causing pollution.
Currently, the law firm is looking for all ship owners who have been fueled with ethanol and equipped with fiberglass fuel tanks at gas stations in California.
