Cummins in-depth research to provide multiple clean energy solutions for the market

Calling the “busy” port of Los Angeles is only a conservative statement, and the 43-mile waterfront in Los Angeles is known as the main gateway to North American international trade. Cummins ' clean diesel and natural gas power technology significantly reduces emissions and helps customers improve the air quality of their ports. Cummins engineers are studying how the electric powertrain will play an important role in reducing emissions and improving air quality in the future.

One of the challenges in applying power technology to ports is the construction of charging infrastructure. Innovative projects led by the US Department of Energy, led by Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification (WAVE), focus on developing and deploying high-power, ultra-fast charging devices. WAVE will work with Cummins, Schneider Electric, Utah State University and Total Transportation Services (TTSI) to develop and display the first 500 kW "XMEG" wireless inductive charger to charge electric cargo trailers. The charger utilizes Utah's direct medium-voltage grid connection technology to dramatically reduce the cost, size and complexity of installing XMEG systems.

WAVE technology wirelessly transfers power to a receiver board mounted on a car's chassis through an embedded charging pad placed on the road surface, reducing the amount of on-board storage required for operation. The innovative WAVE Extreme Charger will allow TTSI trailers to be recharged at the cargo handling station. This breakthrough improvement enables fast and fast charging. This “fast charging” capability will greatly extend the truck's uptime and eliminate battery life, enabling them to complete the 24/7 uninterrupted freight operation cycle. WAVE CEO Michael Masquelier said “this is a key technology because electric commercial vehicles will play an important role in improving air quality in cities and ports, but the lack of charging infrastructure may be an obstacle to their application. Utah-based WAVE will deploy and field test the system this year and next. The new system will be installed at the TTSI in the Port of Los Angeles. The project will showcase advanced technologies for achieving sustainable improvements in port air quality. Cummins is integrating an electric powertrain system that will successfully meet the operational needs of this demanding application in the Port of Los Angeles.
